Teaching

Information from applied research on vegetable disease management is provided to growers, extension educators, IPM specialists and agribusiness through tours of research fields, farm visits, presentations at grower meetings, articles for weekly and monthly newsletters, and internet postings which are primarily at the Vegetable MD online web site.  While the focus is on needs of LI growers, diseases being investigated are important elsewhere, thus there is demand from outside the region, including international locations, for applied research results from this program, which is provided mainly through articles and meeting presentations. A vegetable disease diagnostic service is maintained at LIHREC. Request documents are prepared for emergency fungicide registrations and label amendments through NYS DEC to provide NY growers with fungicides when needed to achieve effective control. Additional extension activities include participation in the Northeast Organic Network and the Vegetable, Organic, and Soil Health Program Work Teams.  Training is provided yearly to Master Gardeners.
