A young cleistothecium (fruiting body) of Penicillium glaucum, a fungus that causes green mold of apples and pears. Mating has occurred in the center of the fruiting body. The model is about 4" in diameter, whereas an actual specimen measures around 1/10 mm -- smaller than the period at the end of this sentence.

The model is one in a series created by Robert Brendel (1820-1898) of Berlin, which was purchased at Breslau by Andrew D. White around 1870.
