The Center for Cover Crops Information
and Seed Exchange in Africa
CIEPCA Institutional Collaborators
- IDRC (The International Development Research Centre) gave IITA major funding to develop a mechanism for cover crops information and seed exchange in Africa as a result of their Exploration on cover crops. The CIEPCA project is part of their program initiative on People, Land
and Water.
-
IITA houses CIEPCA at their station in Cotonou, Benin Republique. CIEPCA is an
important outreach mechanism of the institute-wide project on Short Fallow
Systems to arrest resource degradation due to land-use intensification,
which is housed in the Resource and Crop Management Division.
-
ILRI (The International Livestock Research Institute) works on improved livestock production, therefore CIEPCA contributing to one of ILRI's institute-wide projects and to the recently developed
IITA/ILRI project on "Development of strategies to promote farmer utilisation
of herbaceous legumes for natural resource management to improve farm income
and food security"
-
WARDA (The West Africa Rice Development Association) develops sustainable rice production systems and therefore is interested
in the benefits of cover crops to control weeds and improve soil fertility.
This work is done in WARDA's institute project with links to the
Cropping Systems Task Force.
-
CIDICCO The International Cover Crops Clearinghouse) is an effort similar in nature to CIEPCA, that is located in
Honduras and focuses on cover crops for Central America, publishing in Spanish
and English. The two organizations share information and learn from each
others' experiences.
-
CIIFAD/MOIST (Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and
Development / Management of Organic Inputs for Soils of the Tropics) group at
Cornell is supporting information on sustainable soil management in the
tropics. The MOIST Group has put the CIEPCA newsletters and a CIEPCA home page on the world
wide web. They also host an electronic discussion group on cover cropping in
French (known as EVECS-L) that is moderated by CIEPCA.
- Rockefeller Foundation is
interested in supporting work on cover crops and has given CIEPCA funding to
