This rotifer was photographed with a compound microscope, differential interference contrast (DIC) lighting and 60x objective. A stack of 12 images was made at slightly different focal depths and Helicon Focus software was used to create one image with deep depth of field. To enhance the dramatic effect, the colors were inverted in Photoshop to create this negative image. A composite of this and several other infected rotifers was used on the cover of Science, January 29, 2010.
