Side Lighting with Bounce Fill

Side lighting is used to highlight the surface topography of a specimen. Mount one light source at a low angle to the specimen so that light streaks across the surface of the specimen, highlighting its topography. Use a white board (foamcore works well) on the opposite side of the specimen to reflect some light back onto the specimen to “fill” in the shadows. Without the fill card, no detail will be seen in the shadows. The position of the fill card can be varied depending on the amount of detail desired in the shadows.
