Notophthalmus viridescens - Eastern newt (red eft stage)

I spent many hours this summer crawling around the forests surrounding Ithaca, NY in search of tiny mushrooms to photograph using a borescope lens. For more information on this project and the camera setup used to make these images, check out the Borescope Images page. While wallowing around in boggy leaf litter and mosquito infested glades I became quite fond of the tiny red efts that were everywhere to be found. They proved to be wonderful photographic subjects, and with the borescope I was able to follow them into nooks and crannies of old logs where they crawled to escape the electronic flash.
