Sarcoscypha occidentalis - scarlet fairy cup & Pisaurina - spider!
Other bugs are fine, but I admit I've never liked spiders. There's something primally scary about
them. Once in Uganda I almost walked face-first into a giant spider that had spun its web across the
road at night, apparently to catch human prey. But I've a colleague here, Linda Rayor, who is, like,
Spiderwoman. She's the one who identified the spiders in our photos. Last time I saw her she was
using giant tweezers to throw escaping spiders back into a big fish tank. Gah! She's been slowly
inspiring me to feel more kindly toward spiders. So more and more, as long as they're standing
near a very beautiful fungus, I can forgive them their spideriness.
