Rocks inhabited by the pearl buttons of this lichen are scattered in my woods. They look as though a
zealous child has shot them with BBs that squashed upon impact. The pearl buttons are discriminating.
They will grow only upon rocks formed in ancient times from the wee bodies of silicon-coated algae.
In my woods the only such rocks have been carried here by glaciers. So finding these living pearl
buttons makes me think fondly of ancient events, and my own good fortune at having arrived
in this place too.
