When you're first learning to identify mushrooms, you've got to grasp what characters to look for, then
remember which characters diagnose which genus. Hygrocybe species are easy and hard to recognize:
They are bright and have a waxy look, like a candle, especially about the gills, but their gestalt is hard
for beginners to grasp. The technical keys will pedantically remind you that, under the microscope, their
basidia tend to be unusually long—no help at all.
